Join the instructor Hua Jiang as she teaches us about the art of Chinese Calligraphy as well as the basics of traditional Chinese painting with calligraphy brush.

Crabs, (螃蟹 páng xiè) walk sideways and swiftly, symbolizing freedom of movement and bold exploration. Their many legs suggest the ability to travel far and wide, a metaphor for a successful journey as in traditional culture In Chinese calligraphy painting.
Persimmon, (柿 shì), carries auspicious meanings, primarily symbolizing “everything goes as planned” and “good fortune and harmony.” This is because the Chinese character (柿 shì) is a homophone for shì (matter or affair), making it a visual pun for success in all endeavors. Additionally, the vibrant red-orange hue of the persimmon represents prosperity, warmth, and sincerity—a heart full of passion and goodwill. Its rich color evokes the phrase hóng hóng huǒ huǒ (紅紅火火), meaning thriving and flourishing.
Chrysanthemum (菊花 jú huā), in traditional Chinese painting, it symbolizes nobility, integrity, longevity, and auspiciousness. Blooming in autumn and undaunted by the cold, the chrysanthemum represents a resilient and unyielding spirit—often referred to as the “frost-defying character” (傲霜精神 ào shuāng jīng shén). Its ability to flourish in harsh conditions makes it a metaphor for the upright and virtuous gentleman (君子 jūnzǐ), admired for maintaining moral strength in adversity. Also, the chrysanthemum is also imbued with meanings of good fortune and long life, making it a popular motif in festive and celebratory art. Notably, white chrysanthemums hold a more solemn meaning. In Chinese culture, white is the traditional color of mourning, and white chrysanthemums are often used to express grief, remembrance, and tribute to the departed. They symbolize purity, respect, and heartfelt sorrow, and are commonly seen in funerals and memorial offerings.
