Join us as we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month and listen to a traditional Chinese musical instrument known as the erhu, for an hour of joyful music time.
The earliest ancestor of the erhu is believed to be the xiqin, which was played in the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). The Erhu (Chinese: 二胡; pinyin: èrhú) is a Chinese two-stringed bowed musical instrument, more specifically a spike fiddle, that is sometimes known in the Western world as the Chinese violin or a Chinese two-stringed fiddle. It is used as a solo instrument as well as in small ensembles and large orchestras. It is the most popular of the huqin family of traditional bowed string instruments used by various ethnic groups of China. As a very versatile instrument, the Erhu is used in both traditional and contemporary music arrangements, such as pop, rock and jazz.

An Erhu virtuoso Wang Guowei will lead a captivating workshop and performance. This special event will feature live demonstrations on a variety of traditional Chinese two-string fiddles, including the erhu, gaohu, banhu, and zhonghu. Wang Guowei is performer on the Chinese two-string fiddle Erhu and a composer. He studied at the Shanghai Conservatory and was concertmaster and soloist with the Shanghai Traditional Orchestra. He joined Music From China in 1996 as Artistic Director and has been hailed as a “master of the erhu” by the American press. Wang Guowei has appeared with such artists as the Shanghai Quartet, Ying Quartet, Continuum, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, Virginia Symphony, Philadelphia Classical Symphony, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Ornette Coleman, Yo-Yo Ma, and has performed across the U.S. and internationally.
